Liver Transplant
Liver Transplant in Turkey
Liver transplantation is a surgery where a sick liver is replaced with a healthy one from someone else’s body. The liver can stop working due to different reasons. Some are sudden, like toxic poisoning, while others are long-term, like liver disease. Patients with severe problems from end-stage chronic liver disease are typically the ones who are considered for liver transplantation.
The liver can grow back to its normal size after surgery, allowing for living-donor liver transplants. There are two types of liver donors: deceased donors and living donors who can give a part of their liver. The number of patients in need of liver transplants exceeds the supply of donor livers.

Which diseases can the surgeons treat with a liver transplant in Turkey?
1. Acute Liver Failure
Acute liver failure happens when the liver, which was previously healthy, suffers significant damage. Toxic poisoning or an illness could cause the damage.
The signs and symptoms of liver insufficiency indicate that the liver has stopped functioning. This is a crucial situation. Once acute liver failure sets in, some livers are able to recover thanks to transplantation.
2. Chronic Liver Failure
The final stage of a progressive, long-term liver illness is chronic liver failure. It indicates that an excessive amount of scar tissue, which lacks blood flow, has replaced your liver tissue. This condition is also known as liver cirrhosis. You will show symptoms of “decompensated” liver disease when your liver’s functions start to fail.
3.Primary Liver Cancer
Primary liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma, is a form of cancer that starts in the liver. The removal of the liver may eliminate cancer and cure it if it hasn’t progressed to other parts of the body. For certain patients, removing the part of the liver with the tumor may be the best choice. However, a liver transplant can be required if your liver is severely damaged.

How is Liver Transplant surgery performed in Turkey?
A liver transplant is a significant surgery that can last six to ten hours. During the surgery, you will be asleep because of the general anesthesia. Surgeons insert various tubes into your body during this type of treatment so that they can perform specific tasks while you’re under anesthesia.
For a few days following your procedure, the tubes will stay in place. Your surgeon will make a single lengthy incision all the way across your belly to reach your liver to start the operation. They will carefully divide your liver and clamp down on any blood arteries or bile ducts that were once attached to it.
The surgeon will surgically attach your new liver to your existing bile ducts and blood arteries after this. You will be transferred to intensive care after your incision is closed.

Recovery of Liver Transplant in Turkey
After surgery, you might need to stay in intensive care for a few days. Your medical team will monitor your health condition and any complications that may arise. They will test your new liver’s functionality by collecting blood samples. They may need to actively control your IV fluid/electrolyte balance, blood sugar, and volume.
You will be transferred to a recovery facility and monitored for a further one to three weeks after your condition has stabilized. Your tubes will then be removed.
It will take a few days for your bowels to function normally again. You’ll start consuming liquids and gradually continue eating solid meals. In a few weeks, the surgeon might take out your incision stitches.
