Dental Implants

Dental Implants in Turkey

Artificial tooth roots, known as dental implants, are surgically implanted into the jaw. Dentists can implant artificial teeth or crowns into a patient’s jaw through these roots. They hold removable prostheses that serve both the chewing function and the patient’s aesthetic needs.

Implant treatment can only be planned after a dental examination. After determining whether or not the bone structure is appropriate for implant treatment through measurements, the application process can begin. Patients who are eligible can get one or more implants, and in some cases, they may need implants for their whole mouth.

Biocompatible titanium is usually used to make full tooth implants, but other materials, like titanium and zirconium, are just as safe. The patient can use the tooth prosthesis for a lifetime without losing its shape as long as they take care of it regularly.

Dental Implant Methods

  1. Endosteal Implants

One of the most popular types of implant used nowadays is an endosteal implant. It consists of titanium, tiny screws, and alloplastic material. Endosteal implants are put into the jawbone through surgery. In time, the implants integrate into the bone. After the bone has healed for a few weeks, support is added.

A small connector called an abutment, which looks like a screw, goes into the titanium implant. The tooth prosthetic is glued to the abutment, and it works like removable dentures. Most people can benefit from this treatment if they have a healthy jawbone.

  1. Subperiosteal Implants

Instead of being inserted into the jawbone, a subperiostal prosthesis stays on the bone under the gum tissue. There is no bonding between the implants and the natural bone. Patients who do not have sufficient jawbone to place an implant are the best candidates for this solution. Their long-term safety has been proven in many clinical settings, even though they are slightly different from endosteal implants.

  1. Zygomatic

Implants for zygoma, also called zygomatic implants, are different from regular tooth implants because they attach to the zygomatic bone, which is also called the cheekbone. If there isn’t enough jawbone for an Endosteal implant, this complex procedure is necessary so that the prosthesis can be put in the patient’s cheekbone.

How is Dental Implant performed in Turkey?

The first step in a Dental Implant is examination. Before the procedure, the patient must have a full physical check and an X-ray. The dentist will perform a comprehensive examination of the area to be treated, including the nerves, sinuses, and underlying bone structure.

Local anesthetic is typically used for this procedure. To reach the jawbone, the dentist will cut into the gums. Then, they will place an implant by drilling it into the jaw and then securing it with screws. Finally, the dentist will stitch gum into the region to protect it.

For a few days, the patient may feel pain and soreness around the implant. In this process, the patient must maintain dental hygiene and diet.

Implants normally fuse with bone over four to six months. This process is called osseointegration. After the osseointegration process is finished, the abutment is put in place. This is an extension that ties the implant to the new tooth.

During the healing process, a temporary bridge or tooth may be given. The procedure is finished when the prosthesis is attached to the artificial tooth root made from implants.

 Preparation Process of Dental Implant

  • Light meals can be eaten two hours before local anesthetic; however, the night before surgery, IV sedation patients should not eat after midnight.
  • To reduce the risk of implant failure, your dentist may recommend antibiotics to be taken before surgery.
  • Patients who have injured jawbones or low bone density might need a bone graft, which may extend the procedure.
  • Don’t smoke if you want to heal faster after surgery.
  • Bring your ID/passport and if you have any medical conditions, please bring medical reports with you.

Recovery after Dental Implant in Turkey

You may recover from anesthesia and pain within 24 hours after surgery.  Please wait at least two hours before eating or drinking anything.

Do not spit or clean your mouth right after surgery. This could damage the stitches or break up the clot, which would lead to bleeding. Use a mouthwash that your doctor has given you to gently clean your mouth.

Exercise: Limiting your physical activity is recommended for 1 day or 2 following the surgery. When you lie down, please keep your head slightly elevated in the first 24 hours Please refrain from heavy exercises for 2-3 days following surgery.

Pain management: You will be using pain killers to ease your pain. Each patient’s pain levels vary a lot; if your pain increases after 3-4 days, do not worry about it, its normal and common.

Sinus involvement: If your dental treatment includes sinus involvement, please follow your post op care recommendations carefully. Do not forget to use a decongestant as directed by your dentist. It is recommended to minimize negative sinus pressure (minimal nose blowing, drinking through a straw) for 7 days. A nosebleed might happen aftersinus lifting. Please refrain from nasal saline rinses.

Prescription: It is important to take the full prescription as directed. (painkillers, antibiotics, mouth wash etc) Please let us know if you experience symptoms such as increased pain and or swelling after 5-6 days.

Stitches: You must avoid brushing/flossing the surgical area until you are seen for your post-operative follow up. Because this can break stitches prematurely or cause movement of the gum. You will rely on an antibacterial oral rinse given to you at the time of surgery to keep the area clean. Please rinse/swish for 30 seconds, spit out 2 times per day. Do not swallow the rinse. You can also rinse with warm salt water during the day, 1 tablespoon of salt to 1 cup of warm water. To prevent bleeding please, do not rinse your mouth for the first day and do not suck from straws during the first 48 hours. Most of the operations are performed with dissolving stiches. Depending on the type of stitch used; stiches dissolve within 2 days. If non-dissolving stitches have been placed, the dentist will remove them in the next appointment. If a stitch comes loose and is bothersome, you can simply clip it off with small scissors.

Bruising and swelling: Both are very common and normal. You can minimize the swelling by placing an ice pack on your face over the surgical area during the first day after surgery (on for 20 minutes, off for 20 minutes; repeat this throughout the day). Most of time swelling peaks in the mornings, as you have been lying down during the night. It will reduce gradually after you get up. Please continue to use ice packs as recommended. Slight seepage/blood staining in your saliva is expected after the surgery, it’s normal. Excessive bleeding is extremely rare. If you are unable to control the bleeding after 40 minutes, contact us as soon as possible.

Sinus grafting: If sinus grafting is performed, patients may experience a post-surgical nosebleed within 2 days following the operation. To keep it under control, pinch the nostrils and tilt the head back.

Smoking and alcohol: Please stay away from smoking and alcohol. It negatively affects healing and success of the surgery result. Avoid smoking as much as possible. Alcohol can negatively interact with painkillers (codeine-based drugs) and some antibiotics. It will also affect your body’s normal clotting mechanism and can contribute to bleeding problems within the first few days following the surgery.

Diet: After the surgery, liquid food supplements are recommended if you are having difficulty eating. Please avoid eating hard or crunchy foods; with small seeds or popcorn which could get stuck in the surgical area.
